Q & A - Working with a pediatric dietitian

What’s the benefit to working with a pediatric dietitian?

As I say on repeat, feeding your children can be tough. As a parent, sometimes these challenges are within your capacity to deal with, but sometimes these issues require expert help to manage. Whether these issues are related to medical conditions (like celiac disease or severe constipation), or the social aspect of eating and mealtimes, having a Registered Dietitian to work with can be immensely helpful. I’ve found that the benefits that come from this can impact health, well-being, and happiness for both children and their parents.

Where are you based out of?

I work in Toronto, Ontario (Canada), and see families both within Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. If you live outside of this area, I am happy to work with you virtually over Zoom!

What’s the difference between a Registered Dietitian and Registered Holistic Nutritionist?

I get this question all the time. There’s a big difference in the knowledge and quality of care between these two groups. Registered Dietitians are a regulated health profession. There is set criteria to become a dietitian, including graduating with a university degree in nutrition, completing post-graduate practical training, and then writing a qualifying exam. There is also yearly licensing that requires you to complete continuing education and/or complete a learning plan. It takes a minimum of five years to complete training to be a Registered Dietitian, and often more. It’s a lot of hoops to jump through to get into the career!

Registered Holistic Nutritionists usually take a course from a smaller local independent college program that often only take one year to complete. Universities do not offer this program. There are qualifying exams or licensing activities to become a holistic nutritionist. Holistic nutritionists cannot work in hospitals or health clinics.

Because of this difference in education, holistic nutritionists often put everyone on the same diet. They are not taught how to calculate individual needs for calories, protein, and vitamins, which is an essential basic skill for a Registered Dietitian.

Good nutrition only happens when you’re able to strike that right balance between the social and scientific aspect of eating- and this is really only achieved through working with a Registered Dietitian.

Does private insurance cover your services?

Yes, most private insurance programs and health spending accounts cover services provided by a Registered Dietitian. Clients will receive a receipt suitable for reimbursement (for both in-person and virtual appointments) after their appointment.

What can I expect when my child is seeing a pediatric dietitian?

Seeing a dietitian can cause some undue stress for parents or children- that fear of being judged about your eating habits can be a scary thought. My modus operandi is that I come from a neutral zone- no judgement or wrist-slapping, no body shaming, and no talk of “perfect diets”.

To make a comprehensive nutrition plan, I like to get to know my families and ask a lot of questions, about things like:

  • your child’s medical history, including growth history, blood work results, or recommendations from other health care providers

  • your child’s eating habits (including favourite foods and any foods they don’t like)

  • the eating environment at home, and how you structure meals and snacks

  • any vitamin or mineral supplements, or natural health products, your child takes

  • your goals!
